Meet Coach Chevelle Guerrero
Hi, I’m Chevelle Guerrero. I’m a proud mom of three daughters who’ve been playing ball since their early Blastball days with the YMCA. As they grew into T-ball and beyond, I found myself jumping in to help and eventually stepping into coaching. Supporting my kids on the field naturally turned into a passion for guiding all young athletes, and I’ve loved every moment of it. I’ve been around the ballfield for years, filling in and coaching whenever needed, and my experience has taught me how important it is to understand not just the game but each individual child’s needs and strengths. While I may not have a formal coaching title every season, I always bring energy, encouragement, and a helping hand wherever I’m needed on the DC Outlaws team.
Coaching Philosophy and Style
My coaching philosophy is simple: build them up. I believe in meeting kids where they are and encouraging them with words that fit the moment, whether that’s a compliment after a great play or reassurance when they’re feeling down. I teach kids that it’s okay to make mistakes, what matters most is how they handle it and what they learn from it. Every stumble is a chance to grow.
Personal Insights
I engage with the community by being present, showing up for kids, being a safe person to talk to, and encouraging other adults to remember that our kids are the future. I believe community support is essential. When kids feel that support, they learn about dedication and belonging. And if we as adults don’t show up for them, how can we expect them to learn to show up for themselves? I love seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they master something new, it’s such a rewarding feeling and reminds me why we do what we do. I also stay active in the community through my work with The Alley, a teen safety center. My goal there, just like on the field, is to create safe spaces where kids feel seen, valued, and supported.
Advice for Young Athletes:
My advice to young athletes is simple: Just keep trying. Some days will be tough, but you can do hard thing, and you’ll be stronger for it.
Fun and Personal Touch
When I’m not coaching or volunteering, I love reading a good book. I spend a lot of time helping out at The Alley, and I’m always dreaming up ways to breathe new life into youth programs. A fun fact about me? I’m always looking for new ways to grow and give back. And while I don’t have a single favorite team, I love watching any team play with heart.
Vision and Future
I’d love to see the DC Outlaws continue to grow and become a go-to program for local youth, not just a backup option. We have something special here, and I want more families to experience it. As we grow, I hope to see even more kids on the field, more games, and a stronger community behind us.
