Meet Coach Joshua Phillips
Hi, I'm Joshua Phillips, but you can call me "Coach Josh"—that's what the team calls me! I have been involved in coaching for several years. My background includes coaching football and basketball with the YMCA, and while my experience in baseball is a bit newer, I’m proud to have been asked to step up and help out with the DC Outlaws.
Coaching Philosophy and Style
My approach to coaching is pretty straightforward: I believe in less yelling and more coaching. I think kids respond better when they know what they did wrong and how they can improve, so I focus on calmly explaining their mistakes and showing them the correct way to do things. I want your kids to understand that good sportsmanship is the most important thing they can take away from their time in youth sports. At the end of the day, it's not just about winning—it's about learning how to respect others and play with integrity.
Memorable Moments and Achievements
One of the biggest highlights for me since joining the DC Outlaws was helping the team place third in their last tournament and seeing the players receive their well-deserved medals. It was a proud moment for all the coaches, knowing how much effort everyone put into it. For me, just being asked to coach baseball, a sport I played little of, has been a major achievement in my coaching journey.
What I Enjoy Most About Coaching
What I love most about coaching is seeing the kids improve and have fun. Watching them get better at their skills while enjoying the game is what makes it all worthwhile. My goal for this season is to continue helping the team grow, improve, and of course, win more medals!
Community and Engagement
I believe strongly in the power of community support. The more positivity and encouragement the kids receive, the better they feel about themselves, and that confidence shows on the field. That’s why it’s so important for everyone—parents, family, and the wider community—to get involved. Your support helps boost their performance and shapes their experience in youth sports.
Fun and Personal Touch
When I'm not coaching, you can find me working at Walmart and staying involved in my community. One fun fact about me: I coach without raising my voice. I believe that calm instruction goes a long way, and it’s been effective with the kids I’ve worked with.
Vision and Future
In the future, I hope to see the DC Outlaws continue to grow, bringing in more players and expanding our organization. I’m excited to keep teaching the kids how to play the game and see where we can take the team. My advice for your athletes is simple: come to practice and let us coach you. The more they embrace learning and practicing, the better they'll become.
