Meet Coach Travis Gonzales
Hi, I’m Travis Gonzales, also known as Coach Gonzales. I’m the founder of the DC Outlaws Youth Baseball and Softball League. My journey into coaching began when I enrolled my kids in the YMCA sports program, and from there, I found myself becoming more involved. What started as a way to support my own children grew into a passion for building something for the whole community, a league where every child has a chance to play. With over 10 years of coaching experience, I’ve worked with many age groups and watched kids grow in incredible ways. As the founder of the DC Outlaws, I take full responsibility for making sure every kid gets a chance to play, no matter their experience or skill level. I believe in building a program where inclusion, learning, and fun always come first.
Coaching Philosophy and Style
My coaching philosophy is simple and firm: “Every kid will play no matter what.” I believe in giving every child a fair shot and turning any negative into a positive. The most important lessons I strive to teach are responsibility and how to be a good teammate. No matter what level a child is at, they deserve the chance to grow, contribute, and feel proud of their efforts.
Memorable Moments and Achievements
One of the most memorable moments in my coaching journey was the moment that led to starting this league. A few years ago, a situation with my sons being removed from a team for reasons beyond their control pushed me to create something better. That day, I decided to build a league where all kids are welcome, where they can learn, grow, and play without politics getting in the way. That’s how the DC Outlaws began, and it’s been one of the proudest achievements of my life.
Personal Insights
When people ask what I love most about coaching, I can honestly say, everything. From the smiles, the progress, the teamwork, it’s all worth it. I’m also grateful to a former fast-pitch coach who taught me the value of pushing for the best, win or lose. That drive helped shape who I am as a leader and mentor today.
Fun and Personal Touch
When I’m not coaching, I enjoy fishing, hunting, and just spending time outdoors. I don’t have a favorite team because I love them all, every game teaches us something. One fun fact about me? I love sunflower seeds, it’s a little thing, but part of the baseball spirit! My biggest advice for young athletes is this: Don’t be afraid to fail. Everyone makes mistakes, even the professionals. What matters is that you learn from it, correct it, and keep your head up. Growth comes from resilience and determination.
Vision and Future
My goals for the team this season are to help the kids build more confidence and give them the experience they need to grow as athletes and people. Long term, I want the DC Outlaws to continue being a fun, rewarding, and respected program. In the next few years, I hope to see us playing more games, joining more tournaments, and expanding opportunities for every kid involved.
